Recommended Freeware Applications: The Compu-Docs Laptop Installation Boot Disk is for laptop owners who can't have the floppy drive and the CD-Rom Drive in the laptop at the same time and you can't boot to the Windows CD. Because you need to use both a floppy drive and a CD-Rom drive to install a new operating system, it's quite difficult with only the one bay. The file available for download will create a boot floppy for you and it will contain the needed tools to copy your Windows installation files onto your hard drive so you can install a NEW installation of Windows. If your laptop can have a floppy drive and a CD-Rom drive in it at the same time, then you should use the Compu-Docs Desktop Installation Boot Disk instead. The Compu-Docs Desktop Installation Boot Disk is for desktop owners as well as laptop owners who have a built-in floppy drive and a CD-Rom Drive available at the same time. Note: Since EndItAll does not stop your screen saver from running, you should turn off your screen saver manually before you run ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter as the screen saver will interrupt ScanDisk & Disk Defragmenter. Zone Alarm is a free Firewall program to protect your computer from internet hackers while you are connected to the Internet. You can also get the Plus or Pro version for a fee, which has added features but if you're just looking for a good firewall, then the free version is all that you need.. WinAmp is a great program for playing Mp3 files and Mp3 playlist. It uses very little resources compared to some other players. Audacity will allow you to record live audio, and record anything from your Line In or Microphone jacks into Mp3 or Wave files, convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs, edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files, cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together and more. Irfanview is a very fast, small, compact and innovative graphic viewer/editor for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP. With this tool, you can easily edit pictures and perform tasks such as cropping, removing red eye and resizing. Great for reducing the size of pictures for uploading to sites such as e-Bay, Facebook, etc.. SyncBack allows you to backup and synchronize Directories/Folders across your network, between a laptop & desktop and even between your hard drive and CD-RW drive (when used in conjunction with Roxio's Direct CD or Nero's InCD programs). You can easily backup important files to flash memory stick drives. Some scheduling features are included. UPDATED! Ad-aware removes spyware and adware from your computer. Download and install it to your PC. Uninstall older versions before installing new versions. Remember to check for updates before you run it. SpyBot Search & Destroy is another good program for removing spyware and adware from your computer. Uninstall older versions before installing new versions. Download and install it to your PC. SpywareBlaster is another good program for preventing spyware and adware from being installed on your computer. Download and install it to your PC. Remember to check for updates and enable all protection. This program makes changes to the registry to prevent known malware installation. It does not run in the background all the time, which is a good thing. Instructions for running SpywareBlaster are included in the Monthly Maintenance Instructions below. Spy Sweeper (14 day Trialware) is another good program for removing spyware and adware from your computer. Download and install it to your PC. Remember to check for updates before you run it. CoolWebShredder will find and destroy all traces of CoolWebSearch on your system. This includes redirections or hijacking to www.coolwwwsearch.com, coolwebsearch.com, youfindall.net and white-pages.ws. If you find that your browser is sending you to these sites all of a sudden, this little program will take care of it. Make sure that you only download the stand-alone version. UPDATED! Hijack This You'll find the download about one third of the way down the page. Use this tool to create a list of known areas that hijackers use. Clicking the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button and it will show you what runs at startup. Copy the contents of the log file and paste it on This Page or The CompuClues Forum for help in deciphering what is bad or good. Remember to update often. Winsock XP Fix for Windows XP & possibly Windows 2000. It offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components or improper uninstallations of firewall applications or other tools that modify the XP network and Winsock settings. Nistime is a nifty little program you can use to keep your PC's clock set to the correct time via the Internet NEW! FREE! AVG Anti-Virus protects you from malicious viruses, worms, trojans, etc. You have no excuse for not running an up to date anti virus program. It's has an automatic update feature, but sometimes the servers are too busy. I recommend to customers using this product, to right click the system tray icon and to left click Check for Updates if your tray icon loses it's colors and goes grey, which indicates that you need an update. NEW! FREE! Avast Anti-Virus protects you from malicious viruses, worms, trojans, etc. You have no excuse for not running an up to date anti virus program. It's automatic update feature makes keeping your virus definitions up to date a snap. You can can get a full one year software subscription but you must register to get the registration key. Renewals are free too just by reregistering. Trend Housecall is a free online virus scanner. You can check your computer for viruses by going here and running their tool. You'll have to install their safe ActiveX program to run the tool. Check off the drives you want to check and place a checkmark in the Auto Clean box. Then press the Scan button. If you think you have a virus then I recommend running both the McAfee and the Trend Housecall online scanners in addition to your regular anti virus program. I have found no anti virus program that finds 100% of all the viruses. McAfee has a free online virus scanner too. You can check your computer for viruses by going here and running their tool. You'll have to install their safe ActiveX program to run the tool. You'll have to manually delete any virus files found. If the list is long, you'll have to left click in the files found and drag your mouse down to highlight/reveal all the files found. If you think you have a virus then I recommend running both the McAfee and the Trend Housecall online scanners in addition to your regular anti virus program.
