Compu-Docs Laptop Installation Boot Disk
The Compu-Docs Laptop Installation Boot Disk is for laptop owners who can't have the floppy drive and the CD-Rom Drive in the laptop at the same time and you can't boot to the Windows CD. Because you need to use both a floppy drive and a CD-Rom drive to install a new operating system, it's quite difficult with only the one bay. If your laptop can have a floppy drive and a CD-Rom drive in it at the same time, then you should use the Compu-Docs Desktop Installation Boot Disk instead. The file available for download below will format a boot floppy for you and it will contain the tools needed to copy your Windows installation files onto your hard drive so you can install a NEW installation of Windows. You can use a PC running Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP to create the floppy. Save the file below to your hard drive. Once you have the file on your hard drive, double click the file and read the prompts carefully to create the boot floppy. The floppy supports Windows 95 ,98, 98SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. You should be familiar with the FDISK and FORMAT commands and their use. If your hard drive is already partitioned the way you like, you can forgo running FDISK and just reformat your hard drive. The latest version of FDISK, which recognizes drives up to 137GB, is included. If you have a newer Western Digital hard drive manufactured 2002 or later, you may have to use Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools in lieu of Microsoft's FDISK to partition the drive properly as FDISK may not show the full size of the drive. Thanks goes to Bart Lagerweij at nu2 for the Mkbt program used to create the boot sector. Note that reformatting, formatting or fdisking your hard drive will permanently erase all programs and data on the drive. Click here for Fdisk instructions. For example, to format your C: drive, using your Compu-Docs Laptop Boot Disk, at the A:\> prompt type FORMAT C: and press enter. Be sure to print out and read the Readme.txt file included on the floppy you create. Follow the instructions for your particular operating system and whether you have only one partition or two partitions. Once you have your hard drive formatted there are only 3 commands needed to get your installation started. You must do all three commands. The third command will erase the unneeded temporary files from your C: drive right before it starts your operating system installation. The first and third commands are done with your floppy drive in the laptop and the boot floppy. The second command is done with your CD-Rom drive in the laptop and your Windows CD. Just follow the Readme.txt file on the floppy and you should be OK.
