Compu-Docs Desktop Installation Boot Disk
The Compu-Docs Desktop Installation Boot Disk is for desktop owners as well as laptop owners who have a built-in floppy drive and a CD-Rom Drive available at the same time. Because you need to use both a floppy drive and a CD-Rom drive to install a new operating system, this installation boot is quite simple to use. If you have a laptop where only one of the drives can be in the laptop at the same time, you should use the Compu-Docs Laptop Installation Boot Disk instead. The file available for download below will format a boot floppy for you and it will contain the tools needed to copy your Windows installation files onto your hard drive so you can install a NEW installation of Windows. You can use a PC running Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP to create the floppy. Save the file below to your hard drive. Once you have the file on your hard drive, double click the file and read the prompts carefully to create the boot floppy. NEW! I've created the same boot disk in a CD format, so you can boot to a CD (If your BIOS supports booting to a CD and the BIOS is set to try booting to a CD first before trying to boot to the hard drive). You can use your CD creating software such as Easy CD Creator, Sonic, Nero, Etc. to burn the ISO file below to a CD. All of the commands listed here will also work from the CD. The floppy supports Windows 95 ,98, 98SE, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP. You should be familiar with the FDISK and FORMAT commands and their use. If your hard drive is already partitioned the way you like, you can forgo running FDISK and just reformat your hard drive. The latest version of FDISK, which recognizes drives up to 137GB, is included. If you have a newer Western Digital hard drive manufactured 2002 or later, you may have to use Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools in lieu of Microsoft's FDISK to partition the drive properly as FDISK may not show the full size of the drive. Thanks goes to Bart Lagerweij at nu2 for the Mkbt program used to create the boot sector. Note that reformatting, formatting or fdisking your hard drive will permanently erase all programs and data on the drive. Click here for Fdisk instructions. For example, to format your C: drive, using your Compu-Docs Laptop Boot Disk, at the A:\> prompt type FORMAT C: and press enter. Be sure to print out and read the Readme.txt file included on the floppy you create. Follow the instructions for your particular operating system and whether you have only one partition or two partitions. Once you have your hard drive formatted there is only 1 command needed to get your installation started. Just follow the Readme.txt file on the floppy and you should be OK.
